The School of Engineering at Drexel University had a desire to create a focal point for technical research and engineering activity and to create a signature space within this new hub. This project entailed the renovation of 72,000 square feet of an existing 7-story cast-in-place concrete structure and an addition of 80,000 square feet of 7-story steel frame construction to house laboratory, research and teaching facilities along with a new auditorium. Long span steel girders carry the loads above the auditorium over the open space below. The building features a 70 foot tall open atrium designed with a custom designed and built tubular steel space frame system supporting the glass facade.
